Lee Atwater was a republican campaign strategist (and Republican National Committee chairman in the late 1980s) who perfected the art of negative campaigning (anybody remember the Willie Horton ads?). He was really kind of an asshole, but I've had a crush on him since elementary school; I like the game of politics, but I also know that that "game" affects millions of people. Atwater died in 1991 of a brain tumor at the age of 40, and to this day many wonder what he would do were he still alive. From wikipedia: "Harvey Leroy "Lee" Atwater (February 26, 1951 – March 29, 1991) was an American Republican political consultant and strategist. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Atwater was a trusted advisor of U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. He was also a political mentor and close friend of Karl Rove. Atwater's skills at attack politics brought him and his candidates success. His opponents characterized him as "the Darth Vader of the Republican party". Atwater was also a musician, well connected to the R&B community and frequently played with more notable professionals such as B.B. King."
